Buyers Guide: Card Printer Software

Free Expert Consultation

Card Printer SoftwareA Card Printer is an essential item for any business that relies on ID cards. Whether it's for printing secure access cards, Student ID cards or Customer loyalty cards, a card printer can save valuable time by allowing you to print single cards on demand rather then outsourcing and waiting for cards to arrive.

One essential item a lot of customers forgot when purchasing a card printer is choosing the right card printer software. Most card printers come with a basic design & print software, but for more advanced features you will need to upgrade to a full featured version.

Things to consider when purchase a card printer & choosing the right software:

Do I want to print Single Sided or Dual Sided Card?
Some printers come in Single Side and Dual Side print models. Single side print will only print on one side of the card, so if you want to print on both sides you would need to flip the card over and put back through the printer.
Dual sided printers can print on both sides at once. Depending on the model you go for, check the software is compatible with Dual side printing.

Do I want to print ID Photos?
Obviously if printing photos you will also need a camera setup. Check whether the software can import photos directly from the camera or from a database.

Security Features?
Will you be using the cards as basic ID cards? Or do you want them to be secure access control cards?
Some card printers have options of Magnetic Stripe Encoders, Smart Card encoders and RFID encoders. If you plan on using these features you obviously need the cards to suit, and also the software which is capable of encoding them.

Database connectivity & templates
A Card printer is supposed to make your business more efficient, with the capabilities of setting up templates and import from databases. This means you can print full featured cards, standardized cards with a few clicks.
The basic card design software that comes with the printers don't offer these features so check what features you need and select accordingly.
